The Dallas population of individuals who are homeless numbers in the thousands, and every little bit helps! How do you distribute bags?
Through Dallas Police Department Crisis Intervention Unit’s social workers. They work with the population of individuals who are homeless around Dallas and distribute our bags for us to the people who need them most.
How do you efficiently carry out your work without enabling your target population?
By partnering with social workers at the DPD Intervention Unit, who distribute our bags for us, we target those individuals who are homeless who are unable to access the assistance they need - people living under bridges and overpasses, suffering from mental illness, etc. The Dallas Police Department Crisis Intervention Unit’s social workers work tirelessly to gain the trust of these individuals through documented follow-up, give them that access, and reintegrate them into larger society. Our bags help them to accomplish this. The Brown Bag Initiative is an alternative to enabling - we determine immediate needs and fulfill them as best we can while our target population gets back on its feet.
